UCI Juniors Track World Championships

The 2013 UCI Juniors Track World Championships occurred at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome situated in Glasgow through the course of this week which was certainly eventful for many teams. The event consisted of multiple different cycling races such as the Keirin (betting sport in Japan), the scratch race, time trials, team pursuits etc. The participants ages ranged from sixteen to eighteen who were all eager and determined for a challenge.

On August 8th a number of unfortunate accidents occurred in which one cyclist was given a formal warning after supposedly causing a crash between a British and Korean rider, leading to their fall. As this defeated the chance of qualifying for the next round, the warning seemed fair. Thankfully, the concept of winning a medal didn't discourage them in the slightest.

More importantly, an incredible three world records were broken. It was definitely an atmospheric and lively event. As well as breaking world records, Team GB managed to win an astonishing two gold medals in the womens races. I was fortunate enough to ask gold medalist Dainelle Khan a few questions, who was overjoyed and declared "it's like a dream come true". I questioned whether she found it hard or not to handle her education as well as personal training, Danielle claimed her college were really supportive. She trained excessively for two years, which clearly paid off as she is currently a world champion and record breaker. The anticipation of the time trial race she achieved her gold medal in was intense, she admitted to being rather nervous which wasn't at all surprising.

Team GB were so overwhelmed who evidently worked hard in their training leading up this particular event. The crowds encouragement for the team was uplifting as it was clear it had an impact on the team, creating an unbeliveable atmosphere. The upbeat and strident music also added to the atmosphere, making the whole experience somewhat more enjoyable. Personally I think it it made things seem less tense to a certain extent, it created a positive feeling. Cyclists even permitted the events photographers to use flash photography who were very diligent and eager when waiting for their shot.

The second gold medal that went to Team GB was in the womens team pursuit, who beat the world record whilst competing against their Russian opponents. The whole team felt ecstatic, they cried tears of joy and were very proud of their achievement. Coaches from Team GB were just as pleased as they were. I was able to ask a coach a few questions, who told me they train with their riders approximately six times a week. As there were a few accidents, it seemed appropriate to ask what sort of accidents they encounter on a daily basis. The accidents included: broken legs, arms, cuts and so on.

In the evening there were ceremonies, where guests sat in a segregated area being provided with hospitality with a close up view of the cyclists receiving their medals. It was well-executed and formal, medalists received their medal and flowers in pride. Other viewers in the velodrome were able to watch through the large screens above, gaining a better perspective. All teams were extremely respectful and congratulated the winners which was a pleasure to see.
