Trip to Baton Ceremony

On Thursday October 10 2013, the whole Primary 7 of Shawlands Primary went to the City Chambers. We went there because it was a special occasion; the Queen’s Baton was coming to Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games, in 2014!

Shawlands Primary was one of two schools that got to hold the flags; us and Hillhead Primary. There are a lot of Primary 7s and some of us doubled up to hold the flags. The flags were bigger than I expected, I thought they were going to be a little smaller, but they were quite big! I was a double with my best friend, Amy and we both held the Scotland flag.

At 8:45am we set off to go to the City Chambers. We were all so excited but I was a little nervous in case I made a mistake but luckily I didn’t! The stairs were made of beautiful marble. The City Chambers is a beautiful place. It is also a very big building! Some people held their flags in the entrance and some upstairs, but for the doubles, one person was holding it in the entrance and the other person held it upstairs! Amy held it in the entrance and I held it upstairs. I was so excited!

After the baton was brought into the City Chambers, we followed upstairs! The baton was so cool! There was a big room where the ceremony took place. We sat down and listened to speeches by The Lord Provost, and more people! St. Bride’s Primary School sang two songs. So did another group! The mascot, Clyde was there! We didn’t know we were going to meet him that was a big surprise!

After the ceremony was over, we all got something to drink and a biscuit or a chocolate! I had orange juice and a chocolate biscuit! (It was quite nice). I had fun and there were a lot of people there. I really enjoyed it. I hope we get to have another opportunity like this in the future!
