Artic Monkeys at the Hydro

Arctic Monkeys signed off their 2013 UK tour in style at Glasgow’s new SSE Hydro. The indie rock group performed to a sell out crowd, showcasing their new album ‘AM’ throughout a fast paced 22 song set list.

Fans had been waiting for weeks in the build up to the gig after a late postponement due to illness but it was well worth the wait as they served up a feast of hits spanning from their early teenage days to their new sleek and refined image.

Once The Strypes had warmed up the animated crowd the Sheffield band took over with a performance which mirrored their Glastonbury appearance in the summer. Front man Alex Turner strutted onstage in his trademark style to a rousing reception as hit single ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ echoed in the background of the 13,000 capacity arena.

Playing a host of new songs from their recent album including standout tracks, ‘Arabella’ and ‘One for the Road’, they made sure they covered each of their five number one albums. The Yorkshire rockers kept the crowd on their toes throughout, changing the pace of the set as ‘Reckless Serenade’, ‘Cornerstone’ and ‘No1 Party Anthem’ gave the crowd an opportunity to sing along and catch their breath in between high intensity tunes such as the early Monkeys’ classic ‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor’.

They left the stage to a poem-come-song ‘I Wanna Be Yours’ but they saved the best to last with an encore worthy of ending any concert.

Turner and co arrived back on stage to finish off the set with an encore fitting of their maturing image which featured a slower rendition of crowd favourite ‘Mardy Bum’ before finishing with a question for the crowd: R U Mine? The crowd was in no doubt as they exploded into voice, rounding off another brilliant performance by the NME award winning group.

Turner’s showmanship is indicative of a band who are growing in stature, and as their sustained success continues to draw in sell out crowds they continue to deliver both captivating and exhilarating live performances.
